OneGeology – Improving Access to Geoscience Spatial Data on a Global Scale (pdf)

OneGeology is a global initiative to improve the accessibility of geological map data, the interoperability of that data and the transfer and exchange of know-how and experience. Since its inception in 2006 it has been extremely successful and 116 nations are now participating, with over 40 of those nations serving their data to a dynamic web map portal. OneGeology has mobilised geological surveys to act as the drivers and sustainable providers of geoscience datasets through a distributed delivery system on a global scale.

Mapping in the Cloud – How Far Can We Stretch It?

Today it is already common practice to use web mapping applications from cloud services and create “mash-ups” with your own data and services. The cloud not only connects us to roadmaps and various types of imagery, it also provides us with geo-coding, routing and various other services. We can even use services such as Microsoft’s Photosynth to generate 3-dimensional environments from simple photos.

In the first part of the session we will visit a few of these services and find out how simple the integration can be. In the second part we will move towards the more professional GIS. Today we often operate local installations of spatial-enabled databases and high-end GIS. Can we move them into the cloud as well, and if so, where are the limits?

GIS-lösningar för att rädda klimatet (pdf)

Klimatfrågan fick sig en törn i samband med de misslyckade förhandlingarna i Köpenhamn för snart ett år sedan. Problemen kvarstår dock. Fortfarande finns möjligheten till en omställning även om vi alltmer bör börja jobba aktivt med klimatanpassning. Faktum är att geografisk IT kan spela roll i såväl att bromsa uppvärmningen som att anpassa verksamheter till den. Exempel ges på hur GIS kan rädda världen och till och med på hur GIS kan påverka kinesiska myndigheters syn på informationshantering.
